Xanthos Letoon Patara Tour
Xanthos Letoon Patara tour starts with your pickup from the hotel at 9.30. 1 hour drive through the coastal roads and plains will take us to the ruins of Xanthos. This unesco world heritage site has become famous in the 19th century with the discovery of Charles Fellows. Within a small area of visit, we will see some of the most impressive structures like Inscribed Pillar, Harpies Monument and the Theatre. Xanthos was the former capitol of Lycia before the advance of Patara. After leaving this photographic site, we will travel to the sacred site of Letoon. The three temples dedicated to Leto and her twins, Artemis and Apollo, were the most sacred temples of ancient Lycia. The site was once connected to Xanthos through a sacred way. The transfer then takes us to a delicious lunch in Gelemiş Village, near the ruins of Patara. The food here will be as remarkable as the ruins that you will see today. The last visit of the day is to one of the largest sites of Lycia. A walk through the site will take us to the roman period theatre, parliament of the Lycian federation and the main street. Another 20 minutes of walk takes us the recently discovered lighthouse of Patara. Built by Emperor Nero, the lighthouse shed light for the sailors for a couple of hundred years and then was covered in sand as the harbour was silted up. This is the oldest standing lighthouse in the world. The day finishes with a swim in the golden sandy beach of Patara. 16 km’s in total, the beach is a marine turtle, Caretta caretta, nesting area. Changing cabins, showers and a cafe is available at the beach.
